My father was a baker and a cook. He worked at Johnny's Cafe' and at the recreation cafe. My sister married shortly after we came to The Dalles, so it was just my father and I after that. I went to Court St. school for some of the 4th grade. I went to 5th grade in Monterey, CA, where I made the district basketball all-star team. Then we moved back to The Dalles and I went to Whittier school for most of the 6th grade. My teacher was Mrs. Earford. We had a basketball team called the Wolves. Ron Rowland and Loren Schacher was some of my teammates. I think Dennis (Davis) played for the Lions. I went to 7th grade in Goldendale, WA, then we moved back to TD and I finished going through school there. [Ed: Wayne retired from the Oregon State Mental Health Division in 1997, and is now "just relaxin'". He has a son , Wayne, Jr.] |

Linda Louise Wellington Zellman struggled with cancer for 5 years, and it finally took her life. Her health had been declining over the last month, and in her last few days she stayed at the University of Washington hospital surrounded by caring staff and her loving family. She loved using her computer and e-mailing all of you, and my brother Lenny and I (Christy) are grateful to you for all of your kindness and friendship. The following is from Linda for our "Class Family Tree" project: "We moved to The Dalles in 1947. I attended TD schools through Jr. High. After High School, I went to Central Washington State College in Ellensburg and graduated in 1968 with a BA in Recreation. After a year of knocking around, playing hippie, I went to work at Western State Hospital, where I met Len (a nurse). I dropped out in 1973 to play mommie and worked part time at the Tacoma Boys Club as their first female Recreation Specialist. In 1976, I went to work at the Washington Veterans Home as the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. I retired from the State in March (my 55th birthday)with 30 years between there and the time at Western State. Since my retirement, I've been working occasionally as a Party Consultant. (I always said partying is serious business) I also have written a book for kids that I'm currently "shopping around" to publishers, and I am finishing up my late mother's book." The services were held at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood, WA. Her funeral was held April 23rd in the Aspen Chapel. There is a guestbook to view and/or sign at Mountain View Funeral Home |

![]() Cecil James Duncan July 8, 1944 - October 9,2000 |
Steve Lawrence sends: Several of us attended the memorial service for Jim Duncan on Saturday, October 14,2000. In attendance besides myself, were Cathy Cummins, Carolyn Wheeler, Susan Saunders, Judy Tibbets Quint and her husband Clair. It was held at the Church of God on SE 174th and was standing room only. Jim had been a member of this church since 1969. The minister conveyed that he was a loving family man with two sons, a daughter in law and one granddaughter. He loved to hunt and fish and owned a small place in Corbett of about 4 acres. He was very good with his tools and was an accomplished woodworker. He had received his degree in drafting and then in mechanical engineering. He had been a long haul driver for many years. Evidently , he had been battling the cancer for 6 months. The church had taken meals, sat with the family and even done chores around the place. It was obvious, this church and its members held Jim and his family to be very important. Penny Brooks Duncan was his childhood sweetheart and they married in 1969. Jim spent four years in the Navy and served as a mechanic on a mine sweeper off the coast of Vietnam. He was awarded four bronze stars throughout his career. Penny has been a fourth grade teacher for many years in a Christian school in Portland. She told us that she has felt a part of our class and would probably come to our reunions if that was OK. We told her she was a member of our class/family and we would be disappointed if she did not. Several people spoke at the memorial. One man told the story of going camping with Jim and he had never seen so much packed. He asked Jim why he was taking so much and Jim's answer was, " Any fool can go camping and be uncomfortable." Another person told of Jim practicing calling in cow elk with his cow caller. "He got so good that when we went hunting he called in a whole herd on himself. " That story about Jim packing reminded me of how he used to prepare for a football game. He would use a whole tube of tape putting on his pads. We called him Johnson and Johnson. Now I know what he was probably thinking, " Any fool can go out there and get hurt." My Dad, who taught Jim in wood shop once told me there was no one who had to get it right like Jim Duncan. If it wasn't right, he would do it over. That was apparent in his life. The stories seemed also to show that side of him. Penny said that the Class of 1963 had responded with many cards and that she really appreciated it. I know that Jim always came whenever there was a function. For those of you who did not know him well, he was a self-sufficient man who loved his family. ... friends enclose us, like a pair of parentheses. Each one knows us differently, each sustains us in a different way. I am who I am because my friendships keep on growing. Years from now, when our friendship has made itself into something new and preserved itself as something old, I will remember this day. [ Beth Kephart "Into the tangle of Friendship"] |
